Areia

Areia

Creative Direction, Tailor, Textile Designer

Areia meaning 'sand' in Portuguese is a textile and clothing piece made entirely from scratch using dyed linen, pearls, and seashells.

The clothing piece combines the ornate elegance of Indo-Portuguese design with the rustic charm of Rajasthani hand-block printing. Rich fabrics showcasing hand-printed patterns in white on Indigo dyed linen accentuated by peals, embroidered borders, and seashells.

This creates a piece that feels both regal and artisanal, embodying the multicultural essence of India’s history with Portugal, while celebrating the enduring craft of Rajasthani artisans.

Inspiration

The Indo-Portuguese aesthetic, shaped by the centuries-long interaction between India and Portugal, is known for its intricate patterns, detailed motifs, and a blend of European and Indian design sensibilities.

Rajasthani hand-block prints, on the other hand, bring in a traditional Indian craft that emphasizes bold patterns and earthy colors, created using wooden blocks carved with precision. The prints often feature natural motifs like peacocks, flowers, and paisley, layered with geometric shapes that tell stories of Rajasthan's royal history and desert landscapes.
